Faversham is a market town in the Swale district of Kent, situated 10 miles from Canterbury. It is ideally located close to the old Roman Road of Watling Street, and was a favourite of King Stephen who established Faversham Abbey in 1148. The town first organised race meetings on Tuesday 19th October 1790, although the Racing Calendar recorded the meeting as ‘Feversham’.  Entries were made at The Saddlery and after racing an Ordinary took place at The Inns. Races were staged annually and celebrations lasted into the night. The meeting on Tuesday 18th September 1792 enjoyed a massive attendance with a Public Ball at the Mansion Room in the evening. The race committee were always seeking ways to keep the events fresh, and at the meeting on Wednesday 8th September 1819 the Town Purse was won by Mr Garner’s Ceres, beating Robina and Belleropha, but after racing there was a boxing match between Lovell of Chatham and Gattee of London, with victory going to the former. Five years later a meeting was staged on Monday 20th September 1824 when both Sweepstakes over 2 miles were won by Mr Braithwaite’s My Aunt, defeating Fortune Teller in the first and Remnant in the second. A busy card took place on Wednesday 14th September 1836 when the Faversham Sweepstake was won by Mr H Stracey’s Bodice, while the 5 Sovereign Race went to Protempore in front of Robinet and Egremont. The final meeting was staged at the Macknade course on Friday 15th September 1837 when the Town Sweepstakes was won by Mr Carter’s Pumpkin beating Jim Crow and Nelson.
